jpnn.com – The Civil Society Coalition for Security Sector Reform responded to the statement by the Head of the Indonesian National Armed Forces’ Legal Affairs Bureau, Rear Admiral Kresno Buntoro, regarding the proposed removal of the article prohibiting TNI from doing business in Law Number 34 of 2004.

Military observer from the Centra Initiative, Al Araf, who is part of the coalition, said that the proposal was submitted by the Head of the TNI Legal Affairs Bureau in his statement at the “Public Hearing on the TNI/Polri Bill” forum held by the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs at the Borobudur Hotel, Central Jakarta on Thursday, July 11, 2024.

“We view the TNI Kababinkum’s proposal as a mistaken view and reflects the decline of the TNI’s reform efforts,” said Al Araf in a written statement in Jakarta, Tuesday (16/7).

He explained that the military is educated, trained and prepared for war. That is the raison d’etre of the military in any country.

The military’s duties and functions in facing war/defense are noble duties and are a source of great pride for a soldier.

“Therefore, military soldiers are prepared to be fully professional in their fields, not to do business,” he said.

Al Araf assessed that the military was not built for business and political activities because this would disrupt its professionalism and reduce its pride as a soldier which would have an impact on the disorientation of its duties in maintaining the country’s sovereignty.

Therefore, he views the plan to eliminate the business ban in the TNI Law as not only having an impact on weakening military professionalism, but will also weaken the military’s efforts to maintain the country’s defense and sovereignty due to the increase in tasks that are far from the defense and security dimension.

The civil society coalition believes that the proposal to remove the article prohibiting the TNI from doing business is a setback for reform within the TNI.
