The richest man in the world and founder of Tesla and Spice X Elon Musk compared Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to Adolf Hitler in a tweet that appeared to support truck drivers protesting vaccination orders – and which immediately sparked a storm on Twitter.

Musk sent the tweet Wednesday just before midnight in California, and deleted it by noon Thursday, without explanation. He did not respond to a request for comment. Musk, Tesla’s CEO, in late January tweeted support for Canadian truck drivers, who shut down roads and bridges, and drew international attention to their opposition to the health policies pushed by Trudeau’s government.

In response to a tweet describing how Trudeau’s government ordered banks to help cut funding for protesters, Musk posted a memo of a picture of Hitler, with “Stop comparing me to Justin Trudeau” and “I had a budget” written over his head. The tweet came when Musk and Tesla on Thursday accused the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission of an “endless” investigation to punish Musk for criticizing the U.S. government.

Musk has 74 million followers on Twitter, making him one of his most prominent accounts. This is often seen as a marketing ploy for the electric car maker Tesla. Musk is known for his nervous humor and blatant assessments, but his comparison between Trudeau and the Nazi leader, who was responsible for the genocide of millions of Jews and the start of World War II, went too far for many Twitter users.

The American Jewish Committee responded to Musk’s tweet by calling for an immediate apology. Canadian Industry Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne contacted Musk on Twitter and told him his comments were “shocking to be honest”. But his tweet also had more than 35,000 likes, more than 9,000 retweets and many positive comments.
