Elon Musk promotes Armie Hammer film on X, securing global distribution

Tech billionaire Elon Musk uploaded Uwe Boll’s controversial thriller Citizen Vigilante to X for a free 48-hour viewing period, triggering a major commercial boost and securing worldwide distribution rights with Quiver Distribution after German censors denied the Armie Hammer-led film a certificate.

The social media platform owner posted the entire 88 minutes of the action thriller menafn.com directly to his account on X. The film was made available for users to download free of charge over a weekend period, exposing the project to the platform’s vast global audience and immediately generating intense online debate.

The film stars Hammer as Sanders, an American businessman conducting a campaign of vigilante violence in a non-specific European setting. Director Uwe Boll stated that the project drew inspiration from a 2016 criminal case in Hamburg involving three teenagers given suspended sentences after participating in a gang rape. The movie also marks one of Hammer’s most prominent projects since his career stalled in 2021 following accusations of sexual misconduct and physical abuse. Authorities in Los Angeles County ultimately declined to pursue sexual assault charges against the actor, and he has consistently denied all criminal wrongdoing.

Global Distribution Deals Follow Social Media Promotion

The unconventional promotional push on X quickly translated into commercial traction for the indie production. According to an exclusive report by Variety, Quiver Distribution acquired worldwide rights to the feature, excluding the United Kingdom, German-speaking territories, South Korea, and Taiwan. The distribution company, led by co-presidents Jeff Sackman and Berry Meyerowitz, had already secured North American rights and launched the film in the region on June 19.

Director Uwe Boll explained that the connection with Musk materialized unexpectedly through his U.S.-based podcast, Uwe Boll Raw, which he co-hosts with Gary Otto. The production team received a direct inquiry from the billionaire through the podcast rather than through traditional industry channels.

Is Elon Musk reviving Armie Hammer’s career?

“He contacted my U.S. podcast, but not me directly, and they told me, like, ‘We got a message from Elon Musk.’ I thought that it must be a parody account… I mean, you’re not really thinking that he would contact you, but then it turned out it was true.”

Boll acknowledged that giving away the film for free on social media carried immediate financial downsides, noting that while it generated massive public relations value, direct box office and digital rental returns took a hit. The director estimated that the film had generated approximately $600,000 in revenue through digital platforms including iTunes, Amazon, Fandango, and Google Play following its North American release, remaining some distance from recouping its estimated production budget of around $2 million. Musk also posted on X that Citizen Vigilante 2 would be even better.

Censorship Claims and Cultural Controversy in Europe

Before its digital release, the film faced substantial regulatory hurdles in Europe. Boll asserted that Germany’s national film ratings board, the FSK (Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle der Filmwirtschaft), denied the movie a certificate in what he characterized as a deliberate censorship decision. He noted that an appeal handled by a lawyer failed in a six-to-two vote after board representatives maintained that the movie incited violence against immigrants.

In Britain, the film remained unclassified by distributors, prompting Boll to seek alternative routes to audiences while appearing on podcasts run by far-right figures. The project has landed squarely within ongoing European culture wars over immigration and political discourse. Musk’s promotion of the film aligns with his history of supporting anti-immigrant activists. Critics have panned the finished product sharply; Variety critic Todd Gilchrist described the feature as a violent, incoherent, morally bankrupt slice of exploitation.

Despite mixed commercial returns and severe critical backlash, the director is already exploring a follow-up film. Boll indicated that he hopes to release a sequel next year, though no screenplay has been written. When asked whether Armie Hammer would return to star in a second installment, Boll stated that the actor would likely welcome the opportunity. Representatives for Hammer did not respond to media inquiries regarding his potential involvement in future projects.
