jpnn.com – American billionaire Elon Musk estimates that the first flight of an unmanned spacecraft, Starship, to Mars will occur in two years, followed by a manned mission two years later.

“The first Starship to Mars will launch in 2 years when the next Earth-Mars transfer window opens. This flight will be unmanned to test the reliability of a solid landing on Mars. If that landing goes well, the first crewed flight to Mars will be in 4 years,” Musk said at X.

Musk added that the frequency of flights would increase exponentially, with the goal of building a self-sufficient city on Mars in about 20 years.

“Becoming a multiplanet species would greatly increase the chances of conscious longevity, since we would no longer have all our ‘eggs,’ literally and metabolically, on one planet,” he added.

The current cost of sending a payload to Mars is estimated at about $1 billion per ton, Musk said.

“It needs to be increased to 100 thousand US dollars (around Rp1.5 billion) per ton to build an independent city there, so the technology must be 10,000 times better. It is very difficult, but not impossible,” he said.

Musk-led SpaceX is building the Starship spacecraft capable of long-distance flights in the future.

To date, four test flights have been conducted, and only the last flight in early June was successfully completed. (dil/jpnn)
