San Francisco. Many companies, notably Meta and Microsoft, already have intellectual property rights to the “X” brand. The ‘X’ is so widely used and cited in trademarks that it could cause serious problems for Twitter in the future. Across a wide range of industries, there are currently about 900 active US trademark registrations covering the letter X, and the number of lawsuits filed against Twitter could increase.

Trademark owners that protect things like brand names, logos, and slogans can claim infringement if other brands cause consumer confusion. Microsoft has owned an “X” trademark associated with the Xbox video game system since 2003. Meta, a new competitor to Twitter with its Threads platform, is also home to a 2019 registered trademark encompassing a blue-and-white letter “X”, including software and social media.

Meta had some issues

Facebook faced similar issues when it changed its name to Meta.

Faced with trademark lawsuits filed by investment firm Metacapital and virtual reality firm MetaX last year, Meta settled with the companies.

“Twitter can be a headache given the difficulty of preserving a single letter, especially one that is as popular as ‚X” commercially,” says Douglas Masters, a trademark attorney at law firm Loeb & Loeb.
