Eluned Morgan took office as the first female minister of local government in Wales, after being elected by the Welsh parliament, the Senedd, following the resignation of Vaughan Gething.
In July 2024, the Welsh Labour Party made Morgan, 57, the first woman to lead local government.
Previously, Gething, the first black leader in a European government, was in office, but resigned after a wave of scandals, including a $255,000 donation from a convicted environmentalist. A vote of no confidence was held in Parliament, following his resignation on July 16.
Following the appointment, British Labour leader and Prime Minister Keir Starmer described Morgan’s choice as “fantastic news” and stressed that she has ”enormous experience” for the position.
In 2016, Morgan was elected to the Senedd and served in the British Parliament for 15 years. She is now being presented as a “unity candidate” within Welsh Labour, which is divided by the controversies surrounding Gething.
