The possibility of Embraer challenging Airbus and Boeing in the most profitable and disputed niche in the global commercial aviation market, that of narrow body aircraft, has ceased to be speculation for some time. But to make this challenge a reality, the main thing is missing: money.

Fueled by a Wall Street Journal report, a new wave of rumors is based on fact. The first, the technical capacity of the Brazilian manufacturer to design and assemble a larger aircraft, its largest model, the E195-E2, has capacity for 146 passengers.

It is on the border of the so-called “small narrow body” category. Above that size are the “narrow body”, the smallest of Boeing’s 737 Max line transports 172 passengers.

Embraer engineering has a reputation as some of the best in the market, and was the main target of the merger controversially canceled by Boeing in 2020.
