Lima: A state of emergency in the South American country of Peru. The decision comes against a serious backdrop of protests that erupted after the impeachment of former President Pedro Castillo. So far seven people have been killed during the protests. Defense Minister Alberto Otterola declared a nationwide state of emergency for 30 days. MPs impeached Castillo for trying to dissolve the Congress (Parliament) last week. After that, Vice President Dina Boluarte took over as the new president. Then Pedro was arrested by the National Police. Pedro’s supporters, who are facing corruption charges, have launched nationwide protests calling for his release and immediate elections.
