## Fire Response in Pongau
Firefighters Respond to Blaze in Pongau
The fire department in Pongau activated level 3 of their emergency response, summoning aid from neighboring towns like Filzmoos, Eben, Altenmarkt, St. Johann, Flachau, St. Martin am Tgb., and Bischofshofen. Police and fire department drones were also dispatched to the scene to support the emergency services. Initial firefighting efforts were hampered by strong winds and rain. “The changing wind direction posed a significant risk to emergency responders as the smoke spread uncontrollably,” said section fire chief Christian Lackner.
Evacuation and Guest Support
The entire building was evacuated during the operation, with over 100 people inside at the time. Guests gathered in the foyer and were escorted outside by the police. The Red Cross crisis intervention team was on site with five people to assist the guests, some of whom were in shock. The Red Cross reported assisting 140 people in total.
Continuing Efforts and Accommodation Challenges
Firefighting work continued throughout the night, with additional support from neighboring brigades. Over 160 emergency personnel from the fire department, Red Cross, and police were involved. Finding alternative accommodations for the displaced guests proved a challenge. Mayor Josef Hofer stated, “Finding alternative accommodations for all guests is our top priority, but it’s difficult as many are already staying in the town and most hotels are fully booked.” Emergency measures saw guests temporarily housed in the kindergarten.
By morning, all guests had been accommodated in alternative lodgings. The process of retrieving personal belongings remains unclear, as the hotel remains closed. Public donations of clothing have been overwhelming, demonstrating strong community solidarity.
