Emily Blunt Apologizes for “Insensitive” Language in Resurfaced Video from 2012 Talk Show Appearance
Emily Blunt, known for her roles in films such as “The Oppenheimer” and “Edge of Tomorrow,” is addressing a recently resurfaced video from a 2012 talk show appearance where she can be heard using “insensitive” and “hurtful” language.
The video, which was discovered on YouTube and is from the U.K.’s Jonathan Ross Show, features Blunt recalling an incident while filming “Looper” in the U.S. The actress refers to a restaurant server as “enormous.”
Following the circulation of the video online, Blunt has released a statement apologizing for her comments. In an exclusive statement shared with People magazine, she expressed her shock and remorse, stating, “I just need to address this head on as my jaw was on the floor watching this clip from 12 years ago. I’m appalled that I would say something so insensitive, hurtful, and unrelated to whatever story I was trying to tell on a talk show.”
Blunt went on to say that she has always considered herself someone who wouldn’t dream of upsetting anyone and is deeply sorry for the hurt her words may have caused. She admitted that the moment captured in the video is unrecognizable to who she is as a person and that she was old enough at the time to know better.
In the resurfaced video, Blunt can be heard conversing with host Jonathan Ross about her experience dining at a Chili’s restaurant while filming “Looper.” Ross makes a comment about the size of many Americans who dine at Chili’s, to which Blunt replies, “Well, the girl who was serving me was enormous.” She also mentions that the server recognized her during her visit to the restaurant.
Blunt starred alongside Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis, and Paul Dano in “Looper,” a film directed by Rian Johnson that was released in 2012.
