Emily McGonagle left her demanding London legal career during maternity leave to pursue voice acting, ultimately securing eight roles in the animated series Spike. The cartoon launched on Netflix on October 12, 2026, quickly climbing to the seventh-most-watched global show across all genres and becoming the top children’s program in the U.K.
The transition from drafting legal briefs to recording cartoon dialogue began on the living room sofa. While on maternity leave and caring for a newborn alongside her toddler son, Emily McGonagle spent her days immersed in children’s programming like Paw Patrol and Peppa Pig. Instead of tuning out the endless loop of preschool animation, the Colchester commuter found her curiosity sparked.
At the time, her daily routine involved traveling to Canary Wharf for a demanding legal position that frequently kept her at the office until 3 a.m. Looking for a schedule that offered a more sustainable work-life balance for her family, she began researching how performers entered the medium. At first, she dismissed the idea entirely because she lacked formal drama training.

I kind of just wrote it off because I don’t have an acting background.

With encouragement from her husband, Ciarán, she discovered that professional recording equipment could be operated from home rather than a commercial studio. She converted a large wardrobe into a soundproofed vocal booth in 2019, diving into commercial auditions that initially yielded corporate training videos, radio advertisements, and a voicing assignment for a Formula One-themed go-kart ride.
From YouTube Origins to the Netflix Top Ten
Her path to international streaming charts started on an unexpected platform. She discovered an open casting call for an independent animated project posted on LinkedIn, of all places, by the studio behind the production.
The animated series began as a preschool YouTube property titled Fire Spike!, centered on the adventures of a young dragon and his friends. Created by Bored Panda, a Lithuanian company founded in 2009, the channel had modest origins. When McGonagle first joined the cast, the online project held less than 1,000 subscribers and minimal views.
As the channel’s preschool audience snowballed among parents looking for reliable children’s media, the subscriber count climbed to 1.25 million. That digital following caught the attention of streaming executives, landing the show a global premiere on Netflix. Ahead of the platform’s launch, Bored Panda’s head of animation, Jonas Dovydaitis, shared his enthusiasm on social media, admitting he could not get over how cool
it was that children worldwide could finally stream the program.

Voicing Eight Characters Across Multiple Accents
Managing multiple roles within a single animated property demands careful structural preparation. Alongside her work on Spike, McGonagle has provided vocal performances for 20 distinct characters in the video game Game of Thrones: Kingsroad.
| Project Title | Role / Character Count | Platform |
|---|---|---|
| Spike | Eight characters (including the main character’s mother, a giraffe, an elephant, and a canine police officer) | Netflix / YouTube |
| Game of Thrones: Kingsroad | 20 characters | Video game |
To keep her deliveries distinct across various projects, she builds detailed profiles for each persona. She writes background biographies that establish age, physical appearance, geographic origin, and personal history before stepping into the booth. Physical movement and precise mouth positioning help her shift between younger and older pitches, as well as distinct English and American accents.
Despite contributing to a major global hit, the recording process remains entirely remote.
Congratulations to Emily McGonagle! She used to finish work as a lawyer at 3 a.m. Now she voices eight characters in Spike, Netflix's number one children's show in the UK.https://t.co/ZACfh5xs83#VoiceOver #VoiceActing

McGonagle Earns Three One Voice Awards Nominations
The pivot from corporate law to professional voice acting has brought industry recognition alongside the global streaming numbers. McGonagle has earned three nominations at the U.K.’s One Voice Awards: she was shortlisted for Outstanding Live Event Announcer in 2022, Best Character Performance in an Animation in 2024, and Best Demo Reel Performance for a gaming demo in 2026.
Her sons, Finn and Jack, are now 11 and nine years old—ages that have long since left preschool dragons behind. While her voice can occasionally be heard on radio broadcasts and Netflix globally, her children remain largely unimpressed by her career shift, often asking her to stop practicing character voices around the house.

If you’d have asked me, when I was watching Peppa Pig all those years ago with my kids, that I’d be hearing my own voice on radio and Netflix, it would be beyond my wildest expectations.

Now, she continues to build her professional portfolio while balancing the demands of motherhood and the amusing indifference of her two young sons.
