Emily will probably be late going to Paris again

When about a week ago the news spread that the Hollywood Screen Actors Guild resumes negotiations with the large studios, in order for the two sides to reach an agreement, many were quick to declare themselves optimistic. The recent resolution of the screenwriters’ strike, after all, with the terms secured, could probably also function as a platform for that of the actors. On Thursday night, however, it became known that the relevant talks did not end up anywhere and are on hold until further notice. This last one could mean from a few weeks to months according to the reports from America (Variety, Hollywood Reporter), since the gap between the two sides does not seem to be bridged.

The recent developments, in fact, seem to have surprised and to some extent disappointed the strikers. “We are surprised. We expected today to be a full day of talks,” said the union’s chief negotiator, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland. Outside its headquarters Netflix in Los Angeles, several of the protesters expressed their deep concern to reporters that the studios appeared determined to take a hard line. It seems, then, that the main friction issue has to do (here too) with the streaming platforms. The actors, for their part, are asking for a percentage of 2% of the total annual turnover from the platforms, which the other side rejects without discussion. The alternative of a “per subscriber” monetary fee is also proving problematic, as there are serious disagreements over how the cost is calculated.

In practice, of course, all this means a lot more delays and postponements in the filming of Hollywood films and series. In fact, the solution to the writers’ strike is pretty much irrelevant – at least in the short term – as long as the actors’ strike continues. The biggest blow concerns, as we said, the platforms. The popular “The Last of Us” by HBO now looks unlikely to have its second season ready before the beginning of 2025. Even later is the third season of “Euphoria”, which is only now starting to develop scripts, while the situation is similar with series such as the “Emily in Paris», «Stranger Things», «The White Lotus» etc.

Things are more complicated when it comes to movies. There productions like “Challengers” by Luca Guantanino or the second part of “Dune” by Denis Villeneuve are actually ready, but unable to reach theaters because their Hollywood stars are prohibited from taking part in the respective promotional campaigns. But again films likeDeadpool 3», «Skatarozoumis 2” and “Gladiator 2” were forced to press “pause” during filming.

In the midst of all the above, more than 700 actors and Hollywood personalities (Gal Gadot, Jamie Lee Curtis, Michael Douglas, etc.) sign an open letter, demanding the immediate release of the Israeli hostages held in Gaza.
