With music to power? But please not with Eminem!

It has long been common practice for politicians to present themselves as cool, heroic or down-to-earth during election campaigns, especially in the USA. There, election campaign appearances are often accompanied by music. The choice of songs is anything but random and is intended to create a (choice) mood among the viewers. But especially with the Republicans, interpreters often complain when their songs are used.

Recent example: Vivek Ramaswamy (38). The entrepreneur from Ohio wants to become his party’s presidential candidate and recently rapped during a performance to the song “Lose yourself” by Eminem (50).

The hip-hop legend didn’t find THAT funny at all – and now he sent his lawyers out! In a letter, they ask the politician not to use Eminem’s pieces in future performances. The US company responsible for copyright, BMI, also confirmed that Eminem had received “an official warning”.

Eminem’s anger probably has less to do with the politician’s chanting qualities. After all, Vivek Ramaswamy was already rapping while he was studying at Harvard. His stage name at the university: “Da Vek”.

What should bother the musician more: Ramaswamy, son of Indian immigrants, is now one of the most vehement defenders of ex-President Donald Trump (77), who is known to want to move back into the White House – however, Trump has to deal with four court cases against him.

Vivek Ramaswamy took Eminem’s criticism lightly. At X (Ex-Twitter) he wrote, alluding to Eminem’s hit “The Real Slim Shady”, with which the rapper became a world star: “He didn’t really say that now, did he?” A spokeswoman for Ramaswamy’s campaign also regretted that that the rapping now “unfortunately has to be left to the real Slim Shady”.

Incidentally, it is not known why the politician chose “Lose yourself” of all things. Ramaswamy really has nothing in common with Eminem. His father is an engineer and lawyer, his mother a psychiatrist, both worked for large corporations. Eminem’s father left the family when the musician was three months old. His mother was 17 when he was born, a drug addict, violent and mentally ill.

Today, Eminem is one of the most successful musicians of all time – with a rising star biography that of course seems perfect for political productions. It’s kind of understandable that the musician has something against that…
