Emirates Health Services Launches National Oral and Dental Health Survey Project for Children in UAE Schools

DUBAI, 17th May, 2020 (WAM) — The Emirates Health Services Corporation launched the second phase of the National Oral and Dental Health Survey Project “Children’s Category” – the first of its kind at the national and regional level – in a number of schools in various emirates of the country with the aim of establishing a base for all oral and dental diseases that represent indicators Oral and dental health according to the World Health Organization.

Dr. Essam Al Zarouni, Acting Executive Director of the Medical Services Sector at the Emirates Health Services Corporation, confirmed that the National Survey of Oral and Dental Health for Children includes many essential goals, foremost of which is enabling the Corporation to establish a comprehensive database aimed at structuring an integrated health system that contributes to the provision of proactive health services. In addition to planning curative services and detailed preventive programs that suit the needs of this age group, as well as supporting national scientific research in the future, noting that the Foundation intends to launch the National Survey of Oral and Dental Health “adult category” project, as a continuation of its efforts in the field of promoting oral and dental health.

He added that the Foundation is proactive in launching initiatives and projects aimed at raising the quality of healthy life, pointing out that the project will lead to spreading awareness among the target groups about preventive measures to reduce the risk of oral and dental diseases, and encourages the target groups to adopt the correct health behaviors and enhances the trend towards early examinations of the health of the teeth. Mouth and teeth, which is in line with the strategic objectives of the institution and at the same time consistent with the directions of the wise leadership and contributes to the realization of the vision of “We Are the Emirates 2031”, leading to the achievement of the goals of the UAE Centennial 2071.

In her turn, Dr. Haifa Hannawi, Director of the Dental Services Department at the Emirates Health Services Corporation, explained that the survey project comes within the framework of the Foundation’s objectives aimed at determining the prevalence of tooth decay, gum disease and malocclusion, which is in line with the recommendations of the World Health Organization, noting that the Foundation seeks Through the launch of the second phase of the project, which is carried out through 7 work teams distributed in the emirates of the country, to conduct a survey of approximately 2,000 male and female students.

She pointed out that the campaign witnessed a large turnout of students in various schools in the country since the launch of its second phase, noting that the Foundation will select students from public and private schools in the country, as it specified certain age groups to conduct the survey among them, and the specified ages range between 5 to 6 years and 12 to 15 year.

For his part, Dr. Musa Marashdeh, Head of Policies and Procedures Department of the Dental Services Department at the Emirates Health Services Corporation, stressed the importance of the survey in enhancing the educational role of health systems, spreading the culture of maintaining oral and dental health, and defining mechanisms for preventing dental diseases, explaining that the research methodology and the survey mechanism are based on To choose a statistical sample in a random way that suits the requirements of scientific research in order to study the percentage of tooth decay, gum disease and malocclusion among children and contribute to identifying the different factors and habits that lead to oral and dental diseases.

The importance of the National Oral and Dental Health Survey project for children is reflected in its contribution to raising and enhancing the level of health awareness among parents after they are informed of the results of examinations for their children and the importance of monitoring oral and dental health and conducting periodic examinations as one of the preventive methods of common diseases that affect children, such as caries and others.
