The number of digital certificates of the Brazilian Public Key Infrastructure (ICP-Brasil) has grown in the country. In 2022, more than 8.4 million certificates were issued, a growth of 12.6% compared to 2021.
There are currently more than 11.8 million active digital certificates in the country. ICP-Brasil is a hierarchical chain of trust that enables the issuance of digital certificates for the virtual identification of citizens.
According to the deputy director-president of the National Institute of Information Technology (ITI), a federal agency linked to the Civil House of the Presidency of the Republic, which aims to maintain the Brazilian Public Key Infrastructure, Maurício Augusto Coelho, the year 2022 marked the exit from pandemic restrictions, but changes in workflows remained.
“The imposition of working remotely via electronic means accelerated the process of transformation from analogue to electronic processes and we took the opportunity to further disseminate ICP-Brasil, digital certificates and qualified electronic signatures”, he said during a virtual event held by Association of Registration Authorities of Brazil (AARB) on March 21.
The accreditations of Registration Authorities in 2022 also showed a growth of 10.6% in relation to 2021. “It means that in 2022 the infrastructure of issuers practically grew in the same proportion of the issuance of certificates”, said the director.
Regarding the projects for this year, Coelho mentioned AR Eletrônica, which is responsible for identifying and registering ICP-Brasil users in a non-face-to-face manner, through a 100% electronic and fully automated service channel.
He also cited fuel pumps with digital certification for metrological objects, whose first models have already been approved by Inmetro. The purpose of the measure is to combat tax evasion and fraud in the supply of vehicles. The exchange of pumps will be done gradually by the stations according to the year of manufacture.
“Despite the few models, this is a huge gateway, not only for metrological objects, but also for the Internet of Things. Inmetro prioritized fuel pumps, but intends to expand the project to include other measuring instruments, such as water, energy, scales, among others,” said Coelho.
Electronic signature projects were also mentioned in documents transacted by the Unified Health System (SUS), the continuity of international agreements and also resolved doubts regarding the list of all assets used by the Registration Authorities and the requirement for an invoice for equipment.
