Asked about the words of Frédéric Veaux, the director general of the national police, in the columns of the Parisian, in which he stated that, “before a possible trial, a police officer has no place in prison”, Emmanuel Macron did not wish to react during his interview on France 2 and TF1.

“I am not going to comment on the words of the director general who is speaking on a series of cases because, where I am as a guarantor of the institutions and also the independence of the judicial authority, it is a decision which was taken by a magistrate, and therefore I will not comment on it”, he specified. The head of state said he understood “emotion” police after the recent riots. But he recalled that “no one in the Republic was above the law”.

The “legitimacy” police officers “is due to the fact that they protect the republican framework and that they enforce democratically voted laws”replied the President of the Republic. “Of course they themselves are within the framework of the law and the rule of law”he pointed out.
