The three-year memorial service for Mikis Theodorakis took place with a modest and simple ceremony in Galata, Chania.
An memorial prayer was held at 11:30 a.m., followed by the Children’s-Youth Choir “Agios Spyridon” from Corfu singing the mournful ecclesiastical hymns, eliciting feelings of deep emotion among the attendees.
A flower laying ceremony followed at Mikis’s grave, attended by his granddaughter Myrtos Theodoraki, who emotionally stated that she feels that “Mikis never left, he is always here!”
The events were attended by a large crowd, while later, the attendees proceeded to the Theodorakis family home in Galata.
A political memorial will follow at 7:30 in the evening at the “Mikis Theodorakis” Theater, in the Venetian port of Chania, featuring greetings from the organizers, a keynote speech by the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, and a musical tribute titled “A Dialogue of Cretan with the Symphonic Music of Mikis Theodorakis”, with Konstantina Vidalaki on piano.
