Many people start a long weekend in the middle of the week. Anyone who has planned a flight with Lufthansa could face difficulties.
Before German Unity Day, Lufthansa passengers in Dresden and Leipzig have to prepare for disruptions. The Verdi union has called on airport services employees to go on an all-day warning strike on Wednesday. “We assume that no Lufthansa traffic will be possible,” explained negotiator Paul Schmidt. When asked, Lufthansa itself was unable to provide any precise information about the effects of the strike.
Lufthansa itself announced in a statement that it would close the two subsidiaries. Around 140 employees were affected, it said. Flying to and from Germany has become significantly more expensive due to “disproportionately high government taxes”. It is no longer economically possible for the companies ASL and ASD to continue operating. Social plans should now be drawn up. A date for the closure has not yet been set, it said. In the future, tasks such as handling aircraft will be taken over by external service providers.
Verdi sharply criticized the announcement. “Even if the employer threatens the utmost, we will not allow ourselves to be divided,” explained Schmidt. The employers did not submit an offer in the second round of collective bargaining either. The union is demanding a wage increase of 850 euros for employees, 3,000 euros in inflation compensation and a bonus for Verdi members. The collective bargaining commission is no longer prepared to “preserve this business model with low wages,” said Schmidt.
