Seniors drive job growth in first half of year
The number of employed people aged 60 or older has increased by 280,000
The ‘economic backbone’ of the 40s decreased by 80,000 people
In the first half of this year (January to June), the number of employed people aged 70 and older increased by 150,000, recording the largest increase in the first half of the year. On the other hand, the number of employed people aged 15 to 29 decreased by over 110,000 in the first half of this year. As the working-age population (aged 15 to 64) is expected to rapidly decrease due to aging, there are opinions that various measures should be considered to increase the utilization of the labor force of the elderly.
According to Statistics Korea on the 14th, the average number of employed people aged 15 and over in the first half of this year was 28,449,000, an increase of 220,000 from the first half of last year. By age, the elderly led most of the job growth. The number of employed people aged 70 and over increased by 150,000 from the first half of last year to 1,925,000, the largest increase since related statistics were first compiled in 2018. The number of employed people aged 60 and over also increased by 282,000 from the first half of last year, the largest increase among all age groups.
In particular, the increase in the number of employed people aged 70 or older has been increasing every year, from 146,000 in 2022 to 148,000 last year. This is the opposite trend to the overall increase in employed people, which slowed from 941,000 in the first half of 2022 to 372,000 last year and 220,000 this year.
On the other hand, the number of employed young people fell by 115,000 in the first half of this year, the largest drop since the first half of 2020 (-135,000) when the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19) broke out. The number of employed people in their 40s, the so-called “economic waist,” also decreased by 82,000 in a year. The number of employed people in their 30s increased by 91,000, and the number of employed people in their 50s only increased by 43,000.
The problem is that although the supply of labor from the elderly is increasing, the quality of their jobs is not guaranteed. According to data released by the Korea Development Institute (KDI) in June of this year, the results of an analysis of male workers aged 20 to 75 showed that as age increases, the tendency toward analytical, social, and service jobs decreases, while the tendency toward repetitive and physical jobs increases. In simple terms, this means that the older the person, the more likely they are to engage in relatively low-skilled and low-paying jobs.
