Encarnación Lemus, National History Prize for a work on the Residencia de Señoritas

The Extremaduran historian Encarnacion Lemus Lopez has been awarded this Tuesday with the National History Award of Spainendowed with 30,000 euros, for his work ‘They. The students of the Ladies’ Residence‘, a book that offers a “renewed” look at this institution.

As reported by the Ministry of Culture and Sports this Tuesday, Lemus (Villafranca de los Barros, 1960), has been the winner of this year’s edition of the National History Prize also for, according to the jury’s assessment, because ‘They. The students of the Ladies’ Residence are a choral biography “written with great elegance and with an original approach”.

“Es a generational and socio-professional portrait of those Spanish women who led an authentic revolution. Women – the jury added – who broke the mold, nurturing the first avant-garde of professions until then prohibited to the female presence.

Lemus is Professor of Contemporary History at the University of Huelva and it has been professor at the Universities of Santiago and Valparaíso in Chile and at the University of Puerto Rico, at Denis-Diderot Paris 7 and at the University of Michiganas well as a Researcher at the Institute of Present Time in Paris.

He is part of the Editorial Board of the magazine Andalucía en la Historia and the Permanent Seminar on Contemporary History of the Center for Andalusian Studies.

The jury was chaired by Jesús González Gonzálezdeputy director general of Promotion of Books, Reading and Spanish Literature.
