The reflection “continues” on the project of no longer deducting points from the driving license of motorists guilty of “small excesses of speed”, declared the Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin in an interview with the newspapers of the Ebra group. online this Tuesday evening. At the end of May, between the presidential and legislative elections, the Ministry of the Interior had indicated that a reflection was underway on the sanction for speeding less than 5 km/h.
“They are certainly dangerous but often involuntary and represent more than 50% of the points lost (…) The reflection therefore continues to no longer withdraw these points while maintaining the fine”, affirmed Darmanin, who speaks for the first times on the subject. “If our thinking goes to the end, in conjunction with road safety associations, these provisions could come into force in 2023,” he added.
Some road safety associations had deplored at the end of May a “regrettable” track or encouraging motorists “to drive faster”.
Put an end to point traffic
According to Gérald Darmanin, the government is also working on the “optional dematerialization” of the driving license and the gray card, continued the minister, in order to make “unfalsifiable the withdrawal of points”. “We need to put an end to fraud and point smuggling with people who don’t drive and yet have no points on their licence. The fine for fraud would be increased to 3,750 euros (average fine of 339 euros today)”, he detailed.
In order to reduce the time to pass the driving license, the government plans to recruit “100 additional inspectors” (1,300 currently), also argued Gérald Darmanin. “It will give us 150,000 more slots,” he said.
