The strike of cleaning employees at the Saint-Charles station in Marseille, who had been denouncing the non-payment of wages since the beginning of August, ended Thursday after an agreement with the management, we learned from the management and employees.

“This agreement was followed immediately by the start of the cleaning of the station at 7:55 p.m.”, explained the management of the company Laser Propreté in a press release which does not specify the terms of this end to the conflict.

Seventeen days of strike

Started on August 1, this strike had led to the accumulation of cans, food packaging and various rubbish in the station, one of the largest in France. “We are coming out of 17 days of fighting against a system that we condemned”, confirmed to AFP Kamel Djeffel, national secretary of the CAT Cleaning union and spokesperson for the inter-union, without either indicating the conditions of this exit. of crisis.

“Cleaning employees, including those of the station, tram and metro, will never let themselves be done, and whenever necessary, they will fight for their rights and for their achievements”, also said assert Kamel Djeffel.

A symbolic decision in court

Faced with the accumulation of waste at the station, where 16 million passengers pass through a year, two cleaning operations were carried out at night. The mayor of Marseille, Benoît Payan, had issued an order to this effect on August 10, because of the “risk of fires and unsanitary conditions” caused by “the heaping up of garbage”.

On Monday, the legitimacy of the social conflict had also been discussed before the Marseilles court, following a complaint from Laser Propreté. The court’s decision is expected on Friday, but it will be purely symbolic, the social conflict being over. Before August, Saint-Charles station had already experienced two previous cleaning strikes in 2023.
