Endocrinology Association speaks out for captured doctors

The Guatemalan Association of Endocrinology reiterated its support for the four doctors captured by the security forces, after being accused by the Public Ministry of deceitfully extracting a patient’s kidney.

The crime that the Public Ministry imputes to them is “illegal disposition of human organs or tissues”. To one of them was added the signaling of own cover up.

The professionals were pointed out through the social networks of the Prosecutor’s Office, which assured that in the operation they had the support of the United States government.

“The purpose of this statement is to let you know that as an Association we are with you in everything we can support you”reads the statement.

“Our commitment is to demand, once the due process is finished, the legal and public clarifications that correspond and to whom they correspond, since We are aware of the direct damage to you and your families, and indirectly to all the doctors in this country who cause erroneous information.without any evidence or scientific basis, ranging from sensationalism to verbal condemnation,” adds the entity.

Likewise, the aforementioned association sent a message to the “competent bodies for the exercise of justice in our country” and to the media.

“We demand due process for our colleagues and the guarantee that by clarifying the facts the affected parties are fairly compensated”.

“We demand to raise the level of journalistic investigation before making publications without a scientific basis, which, far from helping to clarify the truth, confuse the population,” the statement concluded.

The crime that the Prosecutor’s Office will impute to the professionals is the illegal disposal of human organs or tissues. The Public Ministry issued a statement detailing what each of the four detained doctors did.

  • Dany Ferlandi Chocooj Coy, physician surgeon specializing in video laparoscopy
  • Angel David Valdez Vargas, physician urologist
  • Orlando Rodas Pernillo, physician pathologist

The four detainees are accused of the crime of illegal disposition of human organs or tissues. Against Rodas Pernillo the crime of self-concealment is added.

“The detainees are linked to the illegal extraction of a kidney from a patient who was diagnosed with the extraction of the adrenal gland to justify the intervention. The victim gave his consent for the extraction and after the surgery, upon receiving the pathology, he realized the removal of the organ”, indicates the statement from the Prosecutor’s Office. The complaint was filed by the victim on May 20, 2022.

“The Prosecutor’s Office carried out the investigation as a result of which it raids, registration and seizure of evidence, also obtaining testimonial statements, forensic extractions and scientific evidencethus achieving sufficient evidence to request arrest warrants,” the authorities add.
