PSYCHOLOGY – This gynecological disease, poorly understood and treated by doctors, causes anxiety or depression in nearly one in two patients.

“You crushed me, annihilated me, put me on the ground. You cut me off from those around me, dissociated me from myself and my body. This body so painful…” These few words are taken from a poem sent to us following a call for testimonies by a reader of the Figaro reachingendometriosis. They illustrate the violence of this inflammatory and chronic gynecological disease, still poorly understood although it affects one in ten women of childbearing age.

Researcher at Michigan State University, Professor Stacey Ann Missmer was interested the consequences of endometriosis on the life course of patients. She collected 16 scientific studies from various countries addressing the impacts of this disease on mental health. The result is alarming: the prevalence of anxiety and depression can reach up to 48% among women with endometriosis.
