Karunaratne and Angelo Mathews (36) then shared a 55-run partnership to salvage the innings. After scoring a half-century for the 54th time in Tests, Karunaratne failed to handle Ollie Stone’s bouncing ball and the ball hit his gloves and went into the hands of wicketkeeper Jamie Smith.
After the lunch break, Mathews batted cautiously while Dinesh Chandimal (58) adopted an aggressive approach. Shoaib Bashir broke the 59-run partnership between the two by dismissing Mathews. Mathews returned to the pavilion after giving an easy catch to Woakes in the cover. Gus Atkinson, who scored a century in the first innings, then almost ensured England’s victory by dismissing Chandimal and Kamindu Mendis (four).
