England take on captain Joe Root’s K in the first Ashes cricket Test against Australia. England, who started the second innings with a 278 – run lead, were 2–220 on the third day. Root with 86 and David Malan with 80 at the crease. He is still 58 runs behind. Travis Head’s smashing century helped Australia reach 425 in the first innings.

Score: England 147, 2–220; Australia 425.

Root and Malan added 159 runs for the third wicket. The duo combined for 2–61. Root, the world number one batsman, was out before the run was scored in the first innings. Root played beautifully in the second inning.

On the third day, Head and Mitchell Starc put together a quick double for Australia. Chris Vokes opened the scoring for England, dismissing Starc for 35. Head scored 152 runs. Mark Wood ended the Australian innings by bowling Head.
