England qualified for the quarter-finals of the European Championship after triumphing on penalties over Switzerland.
Regular time and overtime ended 1:1. Thus, the third 1/4-final of the European was played for 120 minutes, and the second was decided after penalties.
From the penalty spot, goalkeeper Pickford grabbed Manuel Akanji’s first, while Palmer, Bellingham, Saka, Tawney and Trent Alexander-Arnold were faultless. After Akanji’s miss, Cher, Shaqiri and Amduni were accurate for the Swiss.
This was the first victory of the English after penalties in a European for the first time since 1996, when they eliminated Spain in the 1/4-final. Since then, they have failed three times, including in the final of the last one, when they lost to Italy after a penalty kick.
Embolo put the Swiss ahead in the 75th minute. The goal came after Ndoye’s perfect cross and the striker headed Konsa straight.
However, in the 80th minute, Bukayo Saka tied two opponents and equalized with a great shot.
In the first half, there was not a single accurate shot on either goal. It didn’t come until the 51st minute when Konsa dropped Embolo but Jordan Pickford saved the striker’s shot. The second was a goal. And the British scored with their only accurate performance.
The British were a little better on the field in the first half, but they wanted to get the ball into the goal. From the start of the second half, however, Switzerland went much more boldly forward.
