The fear that arose after the news of Ben Stokes’ injury in The Hundred came true. The all-rounder has been ruled out of the upcoming Sri Lanka series. Vice-captain Ollie Pope will lead the team in the absence of England’s regular red ball captain.

Stokes, playing for Northern Superchargers, got injured while batting in England’s 100-ball tournament on Sunday. After first aid, the star left the field resting on the shoulders of two members of the support staff. He was later seen standing on crutches in the dugout.

Then on Tuesday, a scan report revealed an injury to his left hamstring. As a result, the England and Wales Cricket Board decided to rest him for the three-Test series against Sri Lanka. Pope, who has served as Stokes’ deputy for more than a year, will take over.

England are hopeful of getting Stokes in the Pakistan series. The England and Wales Cricket Board said in a statement that Stokes hopes to return with the three-Test series on the tour of Pakistan. The series will start in Multan on October 7.

This series will start on August 21 in Manchester. England have decided not to take anyone as a replacement for Stokes. In his absence, Jordan Cox may make his Test debut as a specialist batsman.
