England is moving to overhaul its Test setup by preparing to bring back Joe Root as captain. The leadership reset follows a turbulent period under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum, leaving the England and Wales Cricket Board searching for stability ahead of August’s Pakistan series.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) is executing a major leadership overhaul following the departures of Test captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum. Stokes retired from international cricket during England’s home series defeat to New Zealand, while McCullum was removed from his coaching post just days later. McCullum will remain in charge of white-ball squads until after the 2027 World Cup, but the sudden vacancy at the top of the red-ball program has forced an urgent recruitment drive.
The Return of Joe Root and Coaching Contenders
Root previously led the team in 65 matches between 2017 and 2022, securing 27 victories—the highest number by any England captain. Although he stepped down after a difficult run that yielded just one win in 17 Tests and previously stated he did not want the job again, the current crisis has persuaded him to accept the role once more.
Harry Brook had emerged as the primary alternative after serving as Stokes’s vice-captain. However, the fallout from the Wellington incident, which carried a £30,000 fine, combined with the heavy demands of leading the side across all three formats, ultimately damaged his candidacy. Brook is expected to remain focused on white-ball leadership and could succeed Root permanently following the 2027 World Cup. Another younger prospect, 22-year-old Jacob Bethell, is viewed as a future captain but is not considered ready yet, especially after withdrawing from The Hundred due to a knee injury.
For the head coaching vacancy, former New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming has emerged as the leading overseas candidate. Fleming boasts an impressive coaching record in franchise cricket, most notably with the Chennai Super Kings. ECB chief executive Richard Gould has confirmed that the governing body is open to hiring a non-English coach for the position.
Interim Plans and the Search for Permanent Stability
With a three-match Test series against Pakistan looming at Headingley on August 19—followed by subsequent matches at Lord’s and Edgbaston—time is short for a permanent appointment. Marcus Trescothick is lined up as the leading candidate to take charge on an interim basis, allowing the ECB more time to finalize a long-term coach before the tour of South Africa in December.
Richard Dawson is regarded as the leading domestic English candidate for the permanent job. The Glamorgan coach could work alongside Trescothick during the Pakistan series before stepping into the top job full-time. Andy Flower was initially the ECB‘s first choice, but he ruled himself out after telling the BBC that he could not balance the responsibilities with his existing commitments to Royal Challengers Bengaluru and London Spirit.
Other names linked to the role include Jonathan Trott, Tom Moody, Kumar Sangakkara, and Justin Langer. While Langer was backed by prominent figures like Michael Vaughan and Marcus Stoinis, he is reportedly no longer under consideration.
Rebuilding After a Form Slump
The leadership changes come as England tries to arrest a steep decline in red-ball form. After a blistering start under the McCullum era—where the team won 10 of its first 12 Tests—momentum faded badly. England has lost 18 and won 17 of its subsequent 37 Tests, failing to secure a multi-match series victory since December 2024.
The side enters this transition on the back of a 4-1 Ashes defeat in Australia and their first major home series loss since 2012 against New Zealand. By pairing Root’s experience with Trescothick’s familiarity in the dressing room, the ECB hopes to steady the ship before the high-stakes summer fixtures begin.
