England’s regular captain Jos Buttler has not played since the T20 World Cup held in June due to injury. He was expected to be available for the ODI series against Australia. But in the end that is no longer the case. He will not be able to play in the five-match ODI series.

All-rounder Harry Brookcock has been made England’s acting captain in the ODI series instead. This is the first time that Brooke is going to lead the England team. The 25-year-old batsman previously led Yorkshire and Northern Superchargers in domestic cricket. Besides, he led the team in the U-29 World Cup in 2018.

Brooke has played 15 ODIs for England so far. That’s why England saw a future leader in him. Earlier, he was Ollie Pope’s deputy in the recently concluded Test series against Sri Lanka. Where England won the series by 2-1.

Brook’s captaincy makes England three captains in three formats. Pope became Test captain due to Ben Stokes’ hamstring injury. On the other hand, Phil Salt is leading England in T20 instead of Butler. This time Brook will lead the England team in ODI.

Butler praised Harry Brooke as saying, ‘Good thinking can do. Being the captain is a big opportunity for him. Although he prefers to remain somewhat hidden. But I think he has everything to be a captain. He has a lot of thoughts and knowledge about cricket. I am sure he will create a legacy of his own.’

Butler is fully recovered and could return to the team in November. England will then tour the Caribbean. His recovery is slow, ‘My recovery is a bit slow. I can’t even play in the ODI series. It’s a shame for me. But even at my age I am on the right track. Optimistic about the future.’

The five-match ODI series will start from Thursday. After that, the remaining four matches will be held on September 21, 24, 27 and 29.

England Squad for ODI Series:
Harry Brook (captain), Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethel, Brydon Curse, Jordan Cox, Ben Duckett, Will Jacks, Liam Livingstone, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Jamie Smith, Olly Stone, Rhys Topley and John Turner.
