Liverpool coach Arend “Arne” Martjin Slot is undecided on who his squad’s main defensive midfielder will be ahead of the Premier League.
“We are still evaluating who is suitable for the best line-up,” said Arne, quoted from Liverpool’s official website in Jakarta, Monday (12/8).
The Dutch tactician said that currently the pure defensive midfielder with a wealth of experience available at Liverpool is Wataru Endo.
Apart from that, Arne sometimes shifts the position of several central midfielders further down, including Ryan Gravenberch and Dominik Szoboszlai, as was done in Liverpool’s five pre-season matches in 2024.
In the match against Real Betis, which Liverpool won 1-0, Dominik Szoboszlai dropped to the number six position and was replaced by Stefan Bajcetic in the second half.
Then, against Arsenal, which Liverpool won 2-1, Szoboszlai and Bajcetic replaced each other in both halves.
As Liverpool beat Manchester United 3-0, Ryan Gravenberch was placed as a defensive midfielder in the starting eleven before being replaced by Wataru Endo.
