English Premier League removes Abramovich from Chelsea management

by time news

The Council of the English Premier League (EPL) has disqualified the owner of the London “Chelsea” Roman Abramovich from the post of director of the English club. This happened after the UK government imposed sanctions against the Russian businessman. Meanwhile, Chelsea management has warned the authorities that the club will not be able to complete the current season in the Premier League due to the arrest of Mr. Abramovich’s accounts.

“Following the imposition of sanctions by the UK government, the Premier League Council disqualified Roman Abramovich from the post of director of the Chelsea football club,” the Premier League said in a statement. The board’s decision does not affect the club’s ability to train and play its matches, as stated in the terms of the license issued by the government, which expires on May 31, 2022.

Earlier, Barclays bank temporarily blocked the club’s account. In the current situation, Chelsea cannot afford enough guards and stewards at their home ground, Stamford Bridge, according to The Telegraph. The London team believes that if the current situation continues, Chelsea will not be able to complete the season.

Mr. Abramovich announced the sale of the London club last week, but this procedure is now suspended, and Chelsea operates under a special government license. Thus, Chelsea can continue to play and pay the salaries of their players and staff, but cannot make transfers, as this could benefit Roman Abramovich.

Roman Abramovich handed over the management of Chelsea to the board of trustees of the club’s fund and promised to transfer the entire amount from the deal to help Ukrainian refugees. Against the backdrop of Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine, the Russian businessman was included in the sanctions lists of Great Britain and Canada.
