Enie van de Meiklokjes has been a constant presence on “The Great Bake Off” for years. In an interview with t-online, she reveals what is special about this year’s season.

The twelfth season of “The Great Bake Off” starts on Wednesday. For Sat.1, the culinary talent competition has been a real ratings guarantee for eleven years, so much so that it was even pushed from the early evening slot to prime time.

In addition to the amateur bakers and the expert jury, long-time presenter Enie van de Meiklokjes is the star of the format. At the VIP premiere of “Tim Burton’s Labyrinth” in Berlin, she revealed to t-online: “I have a favorite in the season who will get relatively far, which I’m very happy about.” However, the 50-year-old did not reveal who exactly it is.

The film crew is always speculating behind the scenes about which candidates have the greatest potential. “The fascinating thing is: in the past we could always say after one or two shows: ‘So-and-so are good, they’ll go to the final.’ That’s not the case at all this year, because the tables turn every time.”

Enie van de Meiklokjes promises: “It will be really exciting and there will be really tasty things this time. So not as much frills as in previous seasons, but really honest tasty things.” On set she laughed a lot and sang with the others. “I really enjoy doing that with all the candidates if they dare. It was fun.”

It’s always fun with the celebrities too. Due to the success, Sat.1 has been producing additional seasons since 2017 with stars and starlets who demonstrate their more or less existing baking skills. “We can actually write them off as comedy sometimes,” joked Enie van de Meiklokjes in an interview with t-online.

In addition, five seasons were filmed with professional bakers, and another is not currently in production. “We’re currently tweaking the concept for the professionals and I hope that we’ll be able to film them again,” said the show host. “We actually love the professionals because they give you a completely different perspective on all the things that are baked.”

The experts can try recipes that you know from the start will taste good and don’t need to be adjusted. “But sometimes that can be a bit boring because they’re stuck in a particular taste profile – but then they score so highly visually.”

The mother of twins can learn a lot from the professionals. “I would do it like any housewife, but they have a completely different approach to getting a result and you can always learn something from them. You discover funny things that you would never learn from normal people.”

With the production of the professional spin-off coming to a halt, one of Enie van de Meiklokjes’ regular presenting jobs has also been cancelled for the time being. But that doesn’t give her much free time. “That would be nice. This year is so busy. I’m doing a lot of other things that I don’t usually get to, like audio books.”

For the current season of the “normal” bakers, she promises viewers: “We can look forward to it.”
