Applause was received by the mayor of the “Central” region, Georgi Stamenov, for the reconstruction of the park
“I like it, and a lot! Alleys, lawns, fountains are beautifully designed. And it’s about time it bears the name of Ivan Vazov”.
These are the words of Emilia Stoyanova, one of the hundreds of Plovdiv residents who came tonight to the opening of the renovated City Garden. It overflows with people and you literally cannot miss the alleys. Children run under the dry fountain without getting wet, young people take selfies in front of the water column. Playgrounds are bursting at the seams.
Almost every second person who was asked by “24 Chasa” about the name of the renewed jewel, answered: “Ivan Vazov!”
The former regional governor Andon Andonov, whose grandfathers are related by blood to Plovdiv, is of the same opinion. “Enough with these Russian names! We have Ivan Vazov. From where to where Dondukova gradina? It was never called that,” he grumbled. And the pianist of the Boys’ Choir Yulia Petrova advocates the same thesis. “Doesn’t he deserve the Patriarch of Bulgarian literature? He lived here, he created, he wrote his strongest works,” she states. Gallerist and former head of the State Archives Nedyalka Petrova doesn’t even listen to the question until the end and answers: “Definitely Ivan Vazov!”.
Councilor from “Democratic Bulgaria” Vladimir Slavenski does not hide that he likes the renovated park. But for the name, he says that both City Garden and Ivan Vazov sound good to him. The former mayor of the “Central” district, Dimitar Hadzhipetrov, is also in the audience. “It’s been repaired, but I don’t see any big changes,” he said modestly.
“Well done and congratulations on the renovated first city park in Bulgaria! And applause for the mayor of “Central” Georgi Stamenov, who put his heart and soul so that we are all here,” noted the deputy mayor of the Plovdiv municipality Vladimir Temelkov. According to him, not only Plovdiv residents, but also tourists will seek coolness here. Nearly BGN 5 million have been invested in the reconstruction.
After the official speeches, it was the turn of the soloists of the Plovdiv Opera, who performed arias by Donizetti, Mozart, Lehar and Strauss.
