“Enough !” The front page of American newspapers after the killing of Uvalde

by time news

Small white silhouettes drawn with chalk, as if by a child’s hand in a playground, and which symbolize at the same time the 19 children victims of the shooting in the elementary school of Uvalde, Texas, on May 24. The last cover of the American weekly The New Yorker, signed by the artist Erik Drooker and soberly titled “Uvalde, 24 mai 2022”, could almost do without comment.

The cover of the “Sunday Review”, the Sunday supplement of the “New York Times”, dated May 29.

To illustrate the cover of its Sunday supplement, the New York Times made an equally eloquent graphic choice by listing a number of recent mass shootings, from the one in Oak Creek that killed 7 people at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin in August 2012, to the school shooting in ‘Uvalde.

With each killing, the same chilling and haunting phrase returns: “Authorities said the shooter was able to obtain the weapons legally.”

Enough is enough !

The weekly Time Magazine has decided to inventory on the cover the 213 places where mass shootings have taken place (with four or more victims) in the United States since 1is January 2022, titled with the simple word “Enough”.

The magazine also emphasizes that the killing of Uvalde “is the 27e shooting in an American school since the beginning of the year”.

And this is not the first time that the American weekly has written the word “enough” on the cover for files devoted to gun violence. He has already done so twice: after the killing in Parkland High School, which killed 17 people in Florida on February 14, 2018, or again in August 2019 after a series of mass killings.

For memory

Finally, for its Sunday edition, the local newspaper Uvalde Leader-News, which publishes two issues a week, has meanwhile chosen to put on its front page the photos of all the victims of the shooting at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde: the two teachers and the 19 children.

The title of the article crossing the front page of the newspaper of this small Texan town is as sober as it is heartbreaking: “They were smart, funny and loved”.
