Officials of the Ministry of Health and National Health Service (INSP) presented the results of the National Health and Nutrition Survey (Ensanut) 2020-2023. The work is of great relevance because it shows the first indicators on chronic immune diseases, immunity, overweight and obesity in students and young people.

The Undersecretary of Prevention and Health Promotion, Ruy López Ridaura, indicated that one of the practical results is the recovery of the use of services, which has been reduced due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

He explained that this reference is important, because there is a false statement that during the transition process access to health services has decreased, and this is not the case. He also said that the revenue problem has been going on for another six years.

“You must know that more than 55 thousand workers have been established, four thousand specialists have been hired and the number of general doctors, and nursing staff, has increased.”

What is Ensanut?

The general director of the INSP, Eduardo Lazcano Ponce, indicated that Ensanut is a tool that allows for the continuous monitoring of many indicators in the Mexican population, urban structures and economic characteristics.

It is reported that, through interviews in homes, Ensanut collects information on health needs, proposed vaccination, child activity and well-being, environmental exposure factors, prevalence of chronic diseases, reproductive health indicators, injuries, environment, use of services and nutritional status.

The Director of the INSP Disease Research Center, Celia Alpuche Aranda, recommends regularly to evaluate the immunization status of girls and boys under five years of age and monitor the supply of BCG and hepatitis B vaccines for newborns.

The Director of the Population Health Research Center of the INSP, Tonatiuh Barrientos Gutiérrez, indicated that the prevalence of obesity in the Mexican population is influenced by commercial decisions, such as the use of unhealthy products that help the accumulation of fat.

He said that the consumption of sugar, energy and alcoholic beverages was lower in those with a body mass index within normal ranges, compared to obese people who consumed more than 10 percent of calories in the drinks with added sugars, based on the recommendation of the World Health Organization (WHO).

He pointed out that the promotion of healthy lifestyles, prevention and health care must be strengthened; reinforce policies that have demonstrated potential to improve the food environment; encourage the use of warning labeling on packaged foods and ensure access to safe water and healthy foods.

Researcher in Medical Sciences at INSP, Arantxa Colchero Aragonés, expressed the need to improve health services through the extension of working hours, an increase in medical staff and the provision of essential supplies such as drugs and vaccines.

Obesity and overweight in children and adolescents

The director of the INSP Evaluation and Research Center, Teresa Shamah Levy, announced that the results of the Ensanut 2020-2023 analysis of more than 15 thousand girls, boys and young people show that, in the last 17 years, the spread of overweight and obesity in students only increased two percentage points. However, in young people it goes from 33 percent to 40 percent.

Regarding the prevalence of overweight and obesity by sex in students between 2006 and 2023, we can see that it is always higher in boys than girls. In teenagers, the prevalence is higher in women, with four out of every ten teenagers.
