What kind of band is K-pop?

The ‘2024 DAY6 Special Concert ‘The Present’ held at Gocheok Sky Dome in Guro-gu, Seoul on the afternoon of the 21st is a clear answer to that question.

The youthful balance that took away the complex about being a ‘K-pop band’ was excellent.

The debut song ‘Congratulations’, the representative song of the band’s comeback, ‘You Were Pretty’, ‘So That I Can Become One Page’, and ‘Melting Down’ and Happy’, which ranked first in Melon’s ‘Top 100’, Korea’s largest music platform, and many other youth songs. The songs that decorated one side rang out in unison throughout.
The sentiment that dominates Day6 and the fandom ‘My Day’, which will celebrate its 10th debut anniversary next year, is the growth narrative of youth.

I remember when Day6 went on stage at Club FF as part of ‘Live Club Day’ held in front of Hongdae, Seoul on July 31, 2015, before their official debut.

The fact that JYP Entertainment, a leading K-pop agency, released a band became a hot topic in itself. However, it is true that at the time, it was ignored not only by K-pop fans but also by band fans. The members walked the streets of Hongdae holding lollipops to promote the performance. At the time, there were only a few dozen audiences who watched the performance of those who had not even debuted.
After making their official debut in September of the same year, they held their first concert for two days at Yes24 Move Hall (currently Musinsa Garage) in November of that year with a capacity of approximately 1,000 people. And 9 years later, he became a major pop star performing at Gocheok Dome with a capacity of about 38,000 people, 19,000 people per performance the previous day and today. Just mathematically speaking, the number of concertgoers has increased 38 times.

The artificiality is evident. Day6, however, has a growth narrative that they do not pretend to be. As a K-pop band, by gaining both popularity and talent, consensus has expanded.

Seongjin with the powerful yet sorrowful guitar, Young K with the sophisticated yet rhythmic bass, Wonpil with the emotional yet clear keyboard, and Dowoon with the drums that make a break while racing are all talented and hard-working.
Above all, Day6 has strengths that go beyond being technically good at music. Insights that embrace youth while poking them appear frequently.

“For today / Thank you for just enduring (…) / A chapter of beautiful youth / Let’s write it together” (‘So that it can become a page’)

Those who accurately understand youth do not use technique when expressing it. In this way, Day6 goes the shortest distance to gain sympathy with good melodies and easy lyrics. This is an extremely popular music grammar, but it is not a speaking style that just anyone can create.
I don’t know if the world is as beautiful as it is, but I thought it would be beautiful anyway and suggested that we move forward together. “Will there ever be such a day? / It’s just such a good day / Without worrying about tomorrow / It’s a day when you can smile / Something happens one by one / But if you hold on, someday / Will that day come” (from ‘Happy’).

This message makes us realize that the pages of youth still exist in a corner of the mind of a man in his 40s. It tells us that even if we realize the uselessness of youth rather than its usefulness, we should not be hurt by it, but that even if the customs of our lives that we have used habitually are broken, we can acknowledge it and fill in new pages as more of ourselves.

Producer Park Jin-young, head of JYP, CEO Jeong Wook, known as a band music enthusiast, Studio J general manager Ho-yoon Moon, who is creating an ecosystem for K-pop bands such as Day6 and Exdinary Heroes, and composer Hong Ji-sang, who creates youthful melodies with Day6 members. This proves that DAY6 is a team with the solid planning ability of a large-scale production company, but today’s glory would not have been possible without the hearts of DAY6 and MyDay who truly captured this world.

Day6 is the first K-pop band to enter Gocheok Dome. They put a lot of effort into the sound and stage production and created a quality that is comparable to that of overseas concert teams in Korea. Day6 members had big dreams while watching the Irish rock band ‘U2’ perform here in December 2019.

However, DAY6’s love for music is not harsh regardless of the size of the concert hall. It’s always full and overflowing.

“I don’t think you need to be too strict about saying ‘I love you’ on stage. That’s why I came to this place, and I can talk again. I love you all. I am so grateful to My Day people who made my dream come true. “I hope every day is filled with true love.” (Young K)
