Environment Canada Forecasts Mild Winter for British Columbia

British Columbians face an unusually mild winter as a powerful El Niño pushes warm sea surface temperatures across the Pacific Ocean. Environment Canada forecasts warmer-than-average conditions and less snow than normal for the coast, though seasonal uncertainty leaves room for potential cold snaps.

Winter weather in British Columbia could look strikingly different in the coming months as forecasters point to a dominant climate pattern driving up seasonal temperatures. According to Environment Canada’s seasonal forecast, the province is staring down a high probability of milder conditions and below-normal snowfall.

El Niño Drives Temperature Trends

An exceptionally strong El Niño features warm sea surface temperatures in the tropical Pacific Ocean. Meteorologists expect this phenomenon to peak around the end of the year before decaying through the spring.

Canadian winters historically trend milder during El Niño years, particularly along the west coast. Environment Canada meteorologist Nathan Gillett noted that the pattern, combined with long-term warming trends, heavily favors above-average warmth.

Past Warm Winters Set Records

Canada’s warmest winter on record occurred during the 2023–24 season, which was also an El Niño period. That winter saw national temperatures average 5.2 degrees Celsius above the baseline average, surpassing the previous record set in 2009–10 by approximately 1.1 degrees Celsius.

That warmth was not distributed evenly. British Columbia recorded temperatures between 1.5 and 2.5 degrees Celsius above the baseline average during that span. Central Canada experienced a much wider gap, recording temperatures 6.5 degrees Celsius above baseline norms.

Last year’s conditions on B.C.’s South Coast mirrored those trends, bringing unusually high temperatures, a lack of snow that delayed ski season openings, and Vancouver’s second-warmest winter on record.

Mild Temperatures Shift Snow to Rain in British Columbia

While El Niño typically brings below-normal rainfall and snowfall, its most pronounced influence appears in air temperatures. In British Columbia, those milder conditions mean that precipitation normally falling as snow is increasingly likely to arrive as rain, especially at lower elevations.

Weather agencies caution that mild conditions do not guarantee a snow-free season everywhere. Traditionally colder regions and higher elevations across the country can still accumulate heavy snowfall if active storm tracks deliver precipitation while temperatures hover near the freezing mark.

Meteorologists Forecast a Mild December with Winter Uncertainty

Probabilistic seasonal forecasts indicate a strong likelihood of above-normal conditions rather than precise day-to-day weather predictions. Local outcomes remain tied to incoming storms, Arctic air outbreaks, and other variable factors.

Preliminary outlooks from The Weather Network indicate high confidence in a mild December that could feel like an extension of fall. The trajectory for January and February carries greater uncertainty depending on how quickly the climate pattern evolves, with the possibility that winter will attempt a comeback or stronger finish if the phenomenon fades quickly enough.

The Weather Network’s forecast reports confidence in a mild December, which could feel like an extension of fall, but January and February are less certain. ‘The key question is whether El Niño remains dominant,’ it said.

Whether El Niño remains dominant will determine how quickly the climate pattern evolves.
