Promoters of hotels, bars and restaurants were made aware of the dangers of plastic bags at the initiative of the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts (MTCA) in Cotonou.

During this awareness session, stakeholders in the hotel sector were informed about the law prohibiting the production, importation, and marketing of non-biodegradable plastic bags in Benin.

”Nobody is supposed to ignore the law (…). We said to ourselves that we must still try to make them aware of the articles of the law so that tomorrow they do not receive a visit from the Ministry of Living Environment or the Republican Police so that they are not not subsequently amended”declared Jean-Marie Anigle, Atlantic-Littoral departmental director of Culture and the arts.

Since the promulgation of the law in December 2017, the use of plastic bags remains a common practice, and the effective application of this law remains a challenge.

Actors in the hotel sector engaged

The initiators of awareness hope for a change in mentality and the adoption of eco-citizen behavior by tourism, hotel and catering professionals.

“We urge them to really support the government in its desire to make the tourism sector a truly structuring sector by adopting good practices to truly reveal the Benin destination”insisted Innocentia Ganhounouto, responsible for gender and environment at MCTA.

To further involve these tourism and culture stakeholders in the fight against plastic bags, the ministry plans to extend its awareness campaign to other cities in Benin.
