KINSHASA – Like every June 5 of the year, the whole world celebrates this Monday, the International Day of the Environment. This celebration is carried under the theme “solution to plastic pollution”.

In his speech given on this occasion, the Congolese Minister of the Environment called on all Congolese to raise awareness for good waste management throughout the national territory. “There is no need to remind you, we are living in disastrous situations in our big cities because of the poor management of waste of all kinds. Our cities have become unhealthy,” said Eve Bazaiba indignantly.

Regarding the pollution of plastic waste, Ms. Bazaiba said that under other skies, all single-use plastic packaging is prohibited. The government of the Democratic Republic of Congo, through Prime Minister Jean Michel Sama Lukonde, will spare no effort to fight pollution.

In addition, several measures will have to be applied against offenders from this Monday. “The time for pedagogy has expired. We urge the Congolese population to adopt responsible behavior in the management of waste, particularly plastics”.

It should be noted that World Environment Day was established by the United Nations in 1972 and aims to give a human face to environmental problems, to encourage people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development, etc. Meanwhile, it is Virunga National Park that continues to lose several of its species due to the resurgence of insecurity.
