In a world increasingly aware of environmental challenges, education stands as the fundamental foundation to form citizens committed to preserving the planet.

From the schools, we observe how a transformative movement is already taking shape, where the environmental teaching It is not only a curricular component, but a pillar that drives future generations towards positive change in favor of the climate and nature. In fact, it is a demand from young people themselves: according to a study carried out by GoStudent in collaboration with Opinium, 8 out of 10 students in Spain are concerned about climate change.

The call to action is essential, but there is still a long way to go: according to UNESCO data, although 95% of primary and secondary teachers surveyed consider that teaching climate change is important, less than 30% agree. willing to teach it.

In this sense, getting involved in sustainable days is a valuable resource for empower youth to lead concrete actions and as a global reminder that protecting the environment is a collective responsibility that can inspire change towards a greener and more sustainable future.

Joining efforts in Call to Earth Day, a CNN initiative

Schools around the world have joined the “Call to Earth Day”, the call to action promoted by CNN International. This year’s edition, under the motto “Our shared home”, seeks to encourage reflection on the relationship between urban development and nature, highlighting the impact of human life in both urban and natural environments.

Schools, by joining this initiative, demonstrate the commitment of educate for the future, inciting proactive action and cultivating a generation that not only understands environmental challenges, but also feels empowered to address them. Last year more than 130,000 people from up to 80 countries participated.

Hannah Wright, Primary teacher at the BSB Sitges campus of The British School of Barcelona, one of the participating schools this year, highlights the importance of this day: «Our participation in this project has been invaluable to our students, as it has offered them a unique educational experience that goes beyond the classroom. The variety of topics chosen by them has been impressive: the causes and disastrous consequences of a terrible drought that devastates their environment, air pollution or the danger of extinction of species such as the Iberian lynx and the monk seal are just some of the topics they have explored together. By delving into topics that the students themselves have chosen, they are not only awakening the collective consciousness, but they are becoming influential voices advocating for change.».

On Call to Earth Day, BSB joins thirty-nine other Cognita schools around the world in an exclusive collaboration between CNN and this international group of schools, of which BSB is a part. The students have created videos and art pieces where they have expressed their concern for the planet and the environmental challenges we face as a society.

Lead by example

Beyond awareness days, the integration of education for sustainability must be a tangible commitment that is reflected in concrete measures and that actively involves students in the search for innovative and sustainable solutions.

Projects such as the creation of sustainable gardens, the promotion of responsible consumption practices such as the sale of one’s own kilometer zero harvest, and the design of outdoor classrooms, developed by BSB high school students, are clear examples of how Young people can become agents of change. These initiatives have allowed them to participate in the Eco-innovation Awards, promoted by the Endesa Foundation in collaboration with the European Society and Education Foundation, thus further promoting youth involvement.

Designing environmentally friendly infrastructures from the educational environments themselves is another of the measures that guide new generations towards a sustainable future: BSB has installed 567 solar panels on all its campuses in Barcelona, Castelldefels and Sitges, significantly reducing greenhouse gas emissions. CO2 at 143.34 tons and offering a practical lesson for students on the impact of eco-sustainable decisions.

Along the same lines, the new Barcelona campus, BSB City, inaugurated last September, has been designed entirely with optimal criteria of acoustic, lighting and thermal quality, which includes technology for automatic air renewal, soundproofing of spaces learning areas, glass facades to maximize the entry of natural light, indoor and outdoor vegetation, as well as an underground water tank that collects and reuses rainwater. All of this aims to offer a comfortable and sustainable educational environment, in a clear commitment to environmental responsibility.
