The European Transport and Environment Federation (T&E)along with other environmental associations, have condemned the plans of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Rishi Sunak, to delay the ban on selling new combustion cars (diesel and gasoline) until 2035, considering it “an attack on the industry, the climate and the consumers”.

This has been stated in a letter published by environmental NGOs, in which they implore the British Government to “avoid a historic mistake”, while ensuring that if this decision is carried out “it will cause shocks throughout the industry”, which is investing heavily in infrastructure, batteries and raw materials to achieve a “seamless transition” in the UK to an electric future.

The United Kingdom is going to delay the ban on the sale of new cars that run on gasoline and diesel in 2035, as announced this Wednesday by the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak. Until now, the date was set at 2030.

At a press conference, Sunak defended that the transition to electric vehicles will be “facilitated”, while adding that “even”, after 2035, these vehicles can still be bought or sold on the second-hand market, Reuters reports.

Sunak has defended that with this measure, the United Kingdom is “aligning its approach” with the calendar planned in the European Union or in other countries. The British Prime Minister’s explanation responded to criticism from the automobile sector.

According to T&E, delaying the date for the ban on the sale of new gasoline and diesel cars until 2035 “would open a huge hole” in the attempt to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.

Thus, although one of the reasons given by the British Government was “not to bankrupt the British people” due to Net Zero, these associations argue that electric vehicles have more affordable maintenance than diesel and gasoline vehicles.
