The Minister of Health, Francisco Alabi, reported through a video that an epidemiological alert has been declared in El Salvador due to the deaths of children caused by the mosquito-borne disease, dengue.

“In light of the deaths of children due to dengue, we have declared an epidemiological alert and are providing the following recommendations,” the Ministry of Health said.

The Minister of Health reported that as of today, July 2, in El Salvador there are three children who have died from dengue and 25 children have been hospitalized, of which 4 of them are in serious condition.

The official calls on parents to not self-medicate if their children have symptoms such as fever, severe headache and eye pain, skin rash, muscle and joint pain, nausea, vomiting and bleeding. In such cases, call 123 or go to the nearest health unit.

Francisco Alabi provided recommendations to prevent mosquito breeding grounds, such as: washing, covering or emptying containers with stagnant water, using repellent for children, and using mosquito nets or clothing that covers the skin.

In addition, a fumigation campaign against mosquitoes that transmit Dengue, Zika and Chikungunya has been carried out in the country.
