The Ministry of Equality has defended the new director of the Women’s Institute, Isabel Garcia, after criticism from Sumar and trans groups. Thus, sources from this department have indicated that García is supported by her resume, both in private companies and in the public sphere, as a public servant, in the defense of the rights of LGTBI people.

In this sense, Equality points out that García’s professional career, both in the private sphere and in public institutions, “has always been related to team management and the achievement of objectives linked to equality policies, paying special attention to the areas of sports, youth and equal opportunities between men and women, as well as the fight against gender violence.

Thus, they remember that in 2015 she was appointed deputy for Equality, Youth and Sports of the Valencia Provincial Council, a position she held simultaneously with that of Councilor for Equality and Commerce of the Xirivella City Council (Valencia) until July 2019, among other positions, while who as a deputy created the Network of Municipalities against gender violence in the province of Valencia, awarded by the Ministry of Equality in 2022 and the Valencia Feminario, a space for national feminist debate, as well as the International Congress of Women and Sports .

He has received multiple recognitions for his work, among others, the Va de Dona Award from the Valencian Pilota Federation 2022; the 2019 Bronze Medal and Badge for Sports Merit in the Personalities category of the Spanish Handball Federation; the 2018 Meninas Prize, awarded by the Government Delegation in the Valencian Community for the fight against sexist violence; and the Dones Progressistes Award 2016, awarded by the Federation of Dones Progressistes of the Valencian Community.

The trans groups were joined by Sumar’s spokesperson on feminism, equality and LGTBI rights and freedoms, Elizabeth Duval, who described the appointment of Isabel García as head of the Women’s Institute as “shameful.”

“This appointment of the Ministry of Equality is shameful and sends a regrettable message. The Women’s Institute cannot be directed by someone who supports the conspiracy to erase women and criticizes the queer dictatorship,” Duval, who forms part of the part of the provisional leadership of Sumar until the celebration of its assembly.
