Popular, but not always profitable for fund investors.

Frankfurt theme funds have recently become increasingly popular: the capital of 281 equity funds examined by Scope Fund Analysis has increased by almost half in the past three years alone – to 119 billion euros. The hype surrounding these products is also reflected in the growing number of new editions, which are primarily technology-driven: the focus here is on artificial intelligence (AI), cloud computing, but also the mobility of the future.
But for investors, the popular products are often not worthwhile at all: Because they usually deliver below-average investment results, as the Scope study shows, which is available exclusively to the Handelsblatt. For example, over the past 12 months, returns on ten of the twelve themes surveyed have averaged 1.5 to 20.8 percentage points below the result of the benchmark index, the MSCI world index. Only two themes made more profit.
