DIG/ Created in 2021, the Lékédi Biodiversité Foundation hosted the 2nd edition on December 8, 2023 in the park in Bakoumba. “Biodiversity Meetings » with guest of honor Jean Félicien Bodinga, Deputy Secretary General of the Ministry of Water and Forests, Environmental Preservation, in charge of Climate and Human-Wildlife Conflict.

Initiated by the mining group Eramet and Comilog, alongside their partner the Gabonese State, these “meetings” aim to position the Lékédi park and more broadly, the Lékédi Biodiversité Foundation, as a convergence platform for exchange good practices. But they also aim to be a platform where researchers, NGOs, decision-makers, managers, and students share their experiences on environmental issues.

At the end of this working day, participants took a guided tour to discover the conservation initiatives and achievements of the park.

You should know that the actions carried out within this park are part of the strategy of the Lékédi Biodiversity Foundation and the new global roadmap “Act for positive mining” launched by Eramet to be deployed in all its operating territories.

Thus, among a set of ambitions measured by concrete objectives, the company has set itself a net positive impact on biodiversity by 2035. This involves, in particular, better knowledge of local issues to accelerate the rehabilitation of mining sites. .

The “Biodiversity Meetings” thus contribute to increasing knowledge to better protect local fauna and flora.

With 14,000 hectares, thehe Lékédi Park remains the only secure animal park in Gabon and is home to exceptional flora and fauna.

Over the years, the protection of the site has allowed the development of local fauna, notably primates, but also less common species such as bush pigs, bushbucks, or forest buffalo.

The current inventory confirms the presence ofaround thirty gorillas and around fifty chimpanzees.

One of the particularities of the park remains the strong presence of more of 500 mandrels as well as rare and endangered species such as the giant Pangolin, Golden Cats, Panthers, false Gharials and more than a hundred species of birds.

The park collaborates with various Gabonese environmental protection organizations to carry out awareness-raising actions on biodiversity and the fight against poaching, and with other international ones, to better understand and preserve biodiversity.
