The first meeting between Turkish and Syrian Presidents Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Bashar al-Assad since 2011 may take place in Moscow.

As reported by Day.Az with reference to TASS, the Daily Sabah newspaper made this statement, citing a source, noting that negotiations could tentatively take place in August.

According to the publication, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed al-Sudani may be invited to the meeting, but Iran will most likely not be invited.

Daily Sabah clarifies that the issue of the withdrawal of Turkish troops from northern Syria will be discussed later, and one of the main issues at the first meeting will be bilateral trade.

The Turkish authorities have not yet commented on this information.

Assad, receiving the Russian President’s special representative for the Syrian settlement, Alexander Lavrentyev, on June 26, stated that Damascus “is open to all initiatives aimed at improving relations with Turkey, if this process is based on respect for sovereignty and the desire of the Syrian state to restore it over the entire territory of the country.”

On June 28, Erdogan announced his readiness to restore diplomatic relations with Damascus, which were severed in 2012. On July 12, he said he had instructed Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan to “meet with his counterparts and prepare a roadmap for the normalization process.”
