/ Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced on Saturday the appointment of former Amazon economist Fatih Karahan as the new governor of the Central Bank, succeeding Hafiza Gaye Erkan, who resigned over a media scandal accusing her of granting benefits to her family at the bank.

Karahan Erkan succeeds the former Wall Street financial executive who resigned after less than a year in office. “I have asked the president to relieve me of my duties, which I have proudly assumed since day one,” she said in a statement announcing her resignation from the Turkish central bank governorship on social media.

Erkan reportedly angered the Turkish president with a statement she made last month to a Turkish newspaper in which she said she had been forced to return to live with her parents with her children and husband, due to inflation and high property prices in Turkey, according to observers.

The campaign against the first female governor of Turkey’s central bank has raised investor concerns and created uncertainty over Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s long-term commitment to his government.

“A campaign has recently been launched to tarnish my reputation,” Erkan said in her statement, noting that she stepped down “to spare my family and my innocent child, who is less than a year and a half old, from being further affected by this campaign.”
