Today the eyes of the world are on this man: Kemal Kilicdaroglu (74), challenger and archrival of Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan (69).

He looks tired when BILD catches him on Friday after an appearance on Turkish television. Actually, after the first round of voting, he no longer wanted to speak to foreign media.

Erdogan had repeatedly propagated that Kilicdaroglu would denigrate the country abroad. But BILD wants to know what his victory would mean for Germany. Kilicdaroglu exclusively makes an exception.

Does the Erdogan era end with this election? “We will win and say goodbye to Erdogan in a democratic way,” says Kilicdaroglu confident of victory. But will Erdogan then accept the election result at all? “He has to,” emphasizes the social democrat in a serious voice.

After the first round, the tone at Kilicdaroglu intensified. Since then, he has been wooing the country’s nationalist voters by promising to send all Syrian refugees home within a year.

“We want them to be able to live in their own country. We will build houses, schools and kindergartens for them and send them back like this. This will relax both Europe and us,” the opposition leader told BILD. According to experts, he will have to work with the Syrian butcher Assad to do this.

But so that he can offer the refugees “humane conditions”, he also wants money from the EU: “We will sit down and talk to them.” By this he also means the refugee deal.

Will refugees then be waved through to Europe again in order to build up pressure? Kilicdaroglu to BILD: “We have no intention of sending them to Europe. We don’t want to create problems, we want to solve them with rational politics.”

With the same mantra, he promises to address the security concerns of German tourists and investors: “We will be happy to show them our hospitality.”
