“May Allah (God) have mercy on my brother Ismail Haniyeh, who was martyred after this heinous attack,” Erdogan wrote on social media platform X, condemning “Zionist barbarism.”
“The purpose of this shameful act is to sabotage the Palestinian cause, the great Gaza resistance and the just struggle of our Palestinian brothers, and to intimidate the Palestinians,” Erdogan added.
Thousands of protesters in Istanbul marched after evening prayers to condemn the killing of Haniya. Many waved Turkish and Palestinian flags and chanted anti-Israeli slogans, and an Israeli flag was burned at the march.
Haniyeh, who spent a lot of time in Turkey before the October 7 attack by Hamas on Israel that provoked the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip, last visited Erdogan in Istanbul in April.
Although Hamas is considered a terrorist organization by the United States, the European Union and Israel, Erdogan has described it as a “liberation movement”. Since 2011, Turkey has provided asylum to “Hamas” officials.
